Downy Mildew in the Indoor Garden Downy mildew ranks as one of the oldest documented plant diseases on the planet. Downy Mildew can happen to anyone. The fungus thrives in cool, humid environments and spreads through tainted equipment, seeds, soil, or spores that splash from leaf to leaf. As we head into cooler weather gardeners should be aware of the symptoms and ready to take action. If you suspect a problem, the first step is to differentiate downy mildew from the more common powdery mildew. Indoor growers can see outbreaks of either or both any time of year. Downy mildew can cause defoliation, stunted growth, damaged flowers/fruits, and eventually will kill the host. The fungus can overwinter in the soil or on infected plant debris just waiting for cool, humid conditions. Once these conditions are met- the disease can quickly reproduce. The downy mildews found on most plants are distinct, meaning they are specific to certain hosts. Melons, hops, grapes- all have their own specific downy mildew. The most recently discovered strain causing problems for the culinary herb market in the US is the basil downy mildew. The good news is, you don't have to worry about the downy mildew on your basil destroying your cucumbers or vice versa. There are simple steps you can take to reduce your chances of running into problems. If you know that downy mildew is a problem in your area you should check into varieties that are bred with a resistance to the disease. Make sure plants receive plenty of light and there is enough space between for good air circulation. Provide adequate drainage to avoid standing water in the medium and try to water the grow medium directly as opposed to overhead watering. If you catch the infection early enough it is possible to control the disease through harvest by spraying the infected area as well as the surrounding area once a week with a fungicide. If you are able to control the environment- simply reducing the humidity or increasing the temperature to over 80 degrees F will kill the mildew in 24 hours. My personal coping mechanism is to bag plants up at the first signs of trouble and throw them in the trash. (Contaminated plants, soil, or plant debris should not be composted). If plants are too precious to trash, many can be reproduced using tissue culture with the results being a sterilized new start. --AL
