LED Gardener- August 2011
Trading in the Bell Bottoms
I would assume you’ve already noticed the LED Gardener has a new look. The changes are part of an overhaul of our
entire site. The original design came around the same time that bell bottoms made their last comeback. Funny how
perception changes over time. The daunting task of making more than 250 pages of LED grow lighting information
visually pleasing to today’s web user is currently underway. All feedback is welcome and appreciated.
Killer LEDs
One of the advantages listed universally for
LED grow lights is safety. I would like to put this claim in
perspective through something called comparative reasoning.
Imagine for a moment that you are in the unfortunate situation
of being a 16 year old boy driving a hot pink Pinto. Your father
brings you home a light gray Yugo. You say the Yugo is
“AWESOME”! This is comparative reasoning. Is a Yugo an
awesome car? No. A Shelby Mustang is an awesome car. The
only way to make the Yugo awesome is to put it up against the
pink Pinto in a 16 year old boys mind. It is just this kind of
reasoning that LED grow light manufacturers are using when
they claim high watt LED arrays are “safe“.
The claims are that high watt LEDs are safe because they
do not contain mercury or heat up like traditional lighting. Does
this make them safe? No. LED Grow Master lighting is safe.
The only way to make a high watt LED appear safe is to
compare it to one of the more dangerous lighting systems
available. The truth is in the phrase high watt LED. They are
high voltage devices being run in wet environments. If you look
beyond the advantages section of literature to the last page of
small print where we tend to find legal disclaimers you see a
more realistic depiction of how safe high watt LEDs are. Here is
the standard disclaimer: “Improper use of LED grow lights can
result in fire, serious injury, or even death.”
LED Grow Master utilizes 5mmHB LEDs in our plant
lighting products. The LGM line is low voltage- less than 20
volts at the bulb. There is virtually no chance of shock, fire, or
burns. LGM lighting is safe for kids and pets. LGM LED grow
lights contain no glass parts, lead, or mercury. The engineers
have considered the human element of lighting right down to
the last detail with a small amount of green to dilate your pupil
and help protect your eyes. When we say our LEDs are safe-
we don’t mean the kind of safe that could burn down your
garden and kill you. LED Grow Master lighting is safe for plants and people.. --AL
