HPS vs Light Emitting Diode vs Hybrid Cost Comparison for Indoor Garden
Electricity Costs Calculated for One 6' x 8' (1.83m x 2.44m) Plot in an Indoor Garden
|
The costs calculated here are for an indoor garden where artificial lighting will be the only source of light (no sunlight). There are many applications that are suitable for using only LEDs. Overwintering, plant maintenance, tissue culture, algae, or extending photoperiod and providing supplemental light in a greenhouse all fall in this category. One can grow fruits and vegetables under only LED Grow Master lighting but you should expect smaller plants (a short internode length) as well as natural growth rates. Using the hybrid system we are able to almost triple this rate of growth to the level that High Pressure Sodium gardeners have come to expect while still saving a significant amount of money and energy over the lifetime of our LED grow lights.
Based on the average price of electricity in the United States in USD 2010. Seventy-five watts added to 1000 watt bulb to account for the electrical draw of ballast. Hybrid assumes 600 watt High Pressure Sodium is on for 4 hours per day with the LEDs running the entire photoperiod.

Cumulative Cost Comparison Factoring Electricity Use and Replacement Costs of Plant Lighting
LEDs have payback by year 4 in both the LED only and Hybrid system. Note that the LEDs are rated for a seventeen year lifetime meaning they are able to pay for their own replacements and add extra money to your pocket. !!!
