The costs calculated here are for an indoor garden where artificial lighting will be the only source of light (no
sunlight). There are many applications that are suitable for using only LEDs. Overwintering, plant maintenance,
tissue culture, algae, or extending photoperiod and providing supplemental light in a greenhouse all fall in this
category. One can grow fruits and vegetables under only LED Grow Master lighting but you should expect smaller
plants (a short internode length) as well as natural growth rates. Using the hybrid system we are able to almost triple
this rate of growth to the level that High Pressure Sodium gardeners have come to expect while still saving a significant
amount of money and energy over the lifetime of our LED grow lights.
Based on the average price of electricity in the United States in USD 2011. Assumes LEDs and HPS mounted
approximately 32" above the plant canopy. Seventy-five watts added to 1000 watt bulb to account for the electrical draw
of ballast. Hybrid assumes LEDs used in conjunction with 250 watts of HPS.
Cumulative Cost Comparison
LED Assumptions-
*Lifetime: Using a 16 hour photoperiod LED Grow Master lighting is estimated for a 17 year lifetime.
*Initial Cost:
LED Only- 10 LGM550s= $2,912
Hybrid System- 8 LGM550s= $2,320
HPS Assumptions-
*Lifetime: Using a 16 hour photoperiod HID bulbs are estimated for a 12 month lifetime. Ballasts are calculated for
a 6 year lifetime.
*Initial Cost:
HPS Only- One 1000 watt Electronic Ballast, Socket Set, Reflector, and Bulb= $599
Hybrid System- One 400 watt Dimmable Electronic Ballast (allows adjustable output- from 200 watts to 400 watts
we recommend Quantum ballasts that can run at 50%, 75%, or full power), Socket Set, Reflector, and Bulb= $389
* Replacement Bulbs:
1000 watt = $69
400 watt= $29
*Replacement Ballasts:
1000 watt= $349
400 watt= $189
Cumulative Cost Comparison Factoring Electricity Use and Replacement Costs of Plant Lighting
Note that the LEDs are rated for a seventeen year lifetime meaning they are able to pay for their own replacements in energy savings.
