November 15th, 2008- "It occurred to me the general EC recommendations for lettuce may be based on raft-systems research -- where nutrients moved more substantially to the plants through diffusion, rather than the mass-flow of the NFT system. Also, since lettuce is sold on a fresh-weight basis, we definitely want it to take up as much water as possible. So I am going to slowly ramp the EC back down to about 1.0 and see what happens."- Dr. Matthew Harbur

Quick Fact- Growth Rates: Herbs have the potential to grow up to 25% faster in a hydroponics solution compared to soil. (Skagg, 1996) Lettuce is particularly adapted to NFT because it is a short-term crop and less subject to damage from root rot.
Quick Fact- Nutrition: Plants grown using hydroponics can have a threefold increase in vitamins and minerals compared to plants grown in soil. (Skagg, 1996)
Quick Fact- Efficient use of Space: Less than 1/3 of the space used for field grown produce is needed to produce in a hydroponics system.
